In all three fields, meanwhile, bycicle use plays a central, connective role: cycling could even be called a seismograph of urbanity. Requiered to mantain and further improve quality of life in increasingly densified and intensively utilized cities is more space for streets and squares, for green and open spaces. Traffic planning is always bound up with urban and landscape planning, of all which condition one another.The task is to reconfigure public space, including the street zone, for the benefit of everyone-to allocate space in ways that promote safe, comfortable and balanced mobility for everyone i transit. And moreover in harmony with green spaces and with architecture that forms a coherent urbanistic ensemble. This volume sketches the contours of a future urban planning that is capable of persuading even more peolple to cycle-with reference to projects from around the world, it advocates a gentle reclaim of the city. Spotlighted are eight selected cities and regions, like Copenhagen, New York, Karlsruhe, Oslo, Portland, Barcelona, the Ruhr region and Groningen.
